Indigo children, crystal children… many of you may already be familiar with these terms.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, here’s a basic rundown. In the 1970’s, Nancy Anne Tappe, a parapsychologist, described that a wave of children being born with “indigo auras” had begun, and that the emergence of these children are the beginning of humanity’s next evolution in consciousness.
These children have a natural intuitive sense of higher consciousness. They are more empathetic, creative and show a deep sense of connection to people and purpose. Here are some traits I have found on another site about Indigos:
They:
- Come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it).
- Have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).
- Simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.
- Get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and don’t require creative thought.
- Often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like “system busters” (nonconforming to any system).
- Seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.
- Will not respond to “guilt” discipline (“Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did”).
- Are highly intuitive – can be telepathic and show extrasensory capabilities.
- Will often say seemingly ‘profound’ statements and have an strong interest in God – they often seem wise beyond their years.
- Are strong willed – have a determination about them, often ‘warrior-like’ in their personality.
- Will often ‘call them as they see them’ and won’t hold back from doing so.
- Can have a fiery temper and demeanor – rarely wavers from the one-track mind.
- Can often be confused with having a defiant attitude – will often do the exact opposite of what they are told to do.
- Have a strong need to help others, individually or globally.
- Are often introverted and a loner.
- Like to work alone most of the time or in groups where is there is mutual cooperation and respect.
- Are seemingly antisocial until they meet up with others like them.
- Can be misdiagnosed as ADD or ADHD.
From the Books:
…from “The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived” by Jan Tober and Lee Carroll.
and
…from Olena Gill, author of “The Indigo Survival Guide”
I truly believe that there is an evolution of human consciousness, and that humanity on a whole is raising it’s vibrational energy of existence. But are indigo children playing a vital part in this shift and are they leading the way? If so, what is our role?
I found and interesting article published in the New York Times about this. It’s an interesting debate that discusses both sides of the coin: those who believe that indigo children are humanity’s new wave of higher consciousness, and those who don’t. Here’s an excerpt from both perspectives:
“To me these children are the answers to the prayers we all have for peace,” said Doreen Virtue, a former psychotherapist for adolescents who now writes books and lectures on indigo children. She calls the indigos a leap in human evolution. “They’re vigilant about cleaning the earth of social ills and corruption, and increasing integrity,” Ms. Virtue said. “Other generations tried, but then they became apathetic. This generation won’t, unless we drug them into submission with Ritalin.”
To skeptics the concept of indigo children belongs in the realm of wishful thinking and New Age credulity. “All of us would prefer not to have our kids labeled with a psychiatric disorder, but in this case it’s a sham diagnosis,” said Russell Barkley, a research professor of psychiatry at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. “There’s no science behind it. There are no studies.”
You can read the whole article here. Do tell me what you think, I’d love to hear your point of view!
- Do you think there is a wave of new consciousness, not just in indigo children but also with individuals like you and I?
- Do you think that indigo children will open a new door to scientific discoveries?
- Do you have or know of an indigo child? What are your experiences?
What about possibilities?
- Do you think every child is in fact born indigo, and that it’s only a matter of nurturing the traits?
- Is it possible then to raise anyone’s vibrational energy? Would you raise your family’s vibrational energy to higher levels if you could?
- Or do you simply believe in the concept of nurturing empathy, consciousness and higher purpose, but feel reserved on the label “indigo”?
Do share cause I find this to be a very interesting topic, and I’d love to hear your thoughts, feelings and stories on this topic!
Thanks!
Melissa

I firmly believe that every child is born with a natural intuitive sense of higher consciousness. Every child is empathetic, creative and shows a deep sense of connection to people and purpose.
Some lose those connections quite quickly and others can hold onto them for a longer time depending on genetic and cellular structure, parental influence and environment (food, energy fields, air, exercise, religous and cultural beliefs).
I think that if we changed our environment and our parenting signficantly that in several generations we can build successfully those traits in many more children.
Hey! I’m an Indigo child. And I’m only 70 years old! How about that?
This is preposterous. Those kids are just overdosed on TV, vaccines and computer games or all of the above. Let them loose under the sun and eat some gravel. They’ll lose their indigo color and turn red presently.
If you’re going to “moderate” (read: EDIT) my comments, do not post. Delete immediately.
# Do you think every child is in fact born indigo, and that it’s only a matter of nurturing the traits? Yes
# Is it possible then to raise anyone’s vibrational energy? Would you raise your family’s vibrational energy to higher levels if you could?
Everybody’s vibrational energy is at 21 cycles per second (CPS). So what one needs to do is lower your vibrational energy consciously. This is where one can change things for the better. Again you can accomplish this with the Silva Method. Backed by 50 years of scientific research.

Wow, I need to think about this for a bit. I will post a profound comment shortly.
My two sons aged 29 and 24 are both Indigo/Rainbow children and fit almost 100 percent into the definition. Both are very talented and have strong psychic skills, very empathic and loving with a very well defined sence of right and wrong. Both have a natural sence of justice and will not tolerate bullying or anti-social behavior. Both have a belief in a unified field in which we all live in energy terms but neither have a belief in a god. ‘There is no evidence’ is their reply. Both have been diagnosed as ADD so both were home schooled to adoid these labels. Both are the intellectual equal of anyone their age and are highly articulate. They have a strong energy field and love to play with it and experiment with its healing effects.
Are they here to save us from our selves, maybe. As their numbers grow throughout the world, yes there are many many more that we know about, it will take a critical mass to do anything possitive other than doing their own thing.
What can we do, just stand aside and let them grow in personal power, it is wonderful to watch,
and they will do the rest. Trust in them as I do.
Hello Melissa,
I receive your newsletters and find them very interesting. Often, though time does not permit to read all of them so I read what seems most important to me. But thank you for the constant flow of information.
I live in Germany and have an Indigo child. I am confronted with so many hard liner ways here mainly because of my son. He is surely a gifted child and also defys the authority issues here, especially in school. I have come to learn that the system here is very backward and not open for change or anything new. This makes our days even harder. My son has interests that are way beyond his years. He can put together electricity stuff and immitate lightening. He is only 9 years. Because weather and lightening was taught in school he thought it would “fit” well into the program. And being the mom that knows how important information is I allowed him to take it to school. Little did I know what the consequences were going to be. His teacher had him on her blacklist and has been puttinghim down in the name of him being “stupid” since. My son has taught me tremendous lessons in my life, lessons that no school could ever teach. Unfortunately, his moral is quite low as he experienced being the outcast of his class for over a year. I am in the process of finding a new school for him which isnt an easy task out here. It is the system that is corrupt and simply outdated. I am convinced that these children are way beyond their years and have a lot to offer those who are open to listen and give them a chance. Often I have noticed, that adults feel threatened by these children. And this because they still live in the old paradigm in which they love to hold on to power and know everything better. Giving these children a chance and ambiance to explore their potential is not always easy but ever so rewarding. There is quest for information and finding answers which in itself brings about an entire new perspective to things. Change is constant and flexibility is a must! But these are the very points that many are often afraid of letting go of. It is scary sometimes protecting such a child and going against the odds but that too is all about change. And it is a given that many of the systems within our infrastructures are in dire need of change. Aren’t these children helping us do just that? Every beginning is difficult but if enough do what they have to do, I am sure the results will show for themselves — even for others that are not Indigos. We all have our gifts in various fields whether we know it or not. If we used our innate talents to make the difference each one for ourselves and let go of fear, I am sure a lot would happen for the positive.

Hi Melissa
The traits described above would equally seem to apply to just ‘children’. It seems to me that all young children have these traits until our society teaches them out of them using oppressive parenting, education, media propoganda and discipline.
Any ‘shift’ will be brought about by a change in education methods, not a new wave of super-beings.
I think the notion of ‘Indigo Children’ is just another way for parents to indirectly satisfy their egos by thinking that their children are somehow ‘special’.
New age pushy parents!
Pete
i would have to completely agree with you…there is a change in the vibrational energy of all beings..and it leaves me with the feeling that we’re moving towards peace, love and timeless gentleness.
the things you point out are important..i also feel
–every child is in fact born indigo, whether you label them as such or not is a matter of your choice of words
–it is possible to raise anyone’s vibrational energy
I believe my grandson is an Indigo child, he had all the traits until the school system diagnosed him with Oppositional/Defiant Personality disorder and ADD and fed him medication that left him depressed and lethargic. He’s weaned off the meds now, but still struggles with school authorities. He is not rude or unruly, just non-participatory, with frequent absences. Sadly we are not able to home school him and can’t afford private schooling. Any suggestions?
I have always fit the description of an indigo vanguard (born before 70s). Also I’ve heard the terms “starseeds, walk-ins” which vary some in definition but all have similar meanings concerning these individuals’ paths.
I resonate most with the term starseed since I feel this best represents my time here on earth. I do not feel that I came from another planet, per se, but I know that my spirit has spent more lives in other realms than earth. This place has always felt foreign to me and the rules and paradigms make little sense. Its been a difficult journey but I never doubted the powerful support of Source energy, the All, the I AM, the creative source with many labels and I’ve always had the tools necessary to withstand. I think the only danger in the use of these terms is in making them a catchall for real organic disorders. But overall, whether one knows an indigo personally or not, the concepts of love and unity are no less important. We can all tap into these natural human emotions, release negativity and promote the unity necessary for our mutual survival and prosperity.
There is obviously a shift in consciousness (envolution), And possible a new awareness in parenting. However, I believe that adults should learn to save themselves and evolve too, and not expect children “save” them. Children are gifted to us, pure and unburdened without the parents mental blocks, and as parents, It is my wish that children are allowed to develope their gifts and flourish. So now begins another new journey into discovery and enlightenment for both parent and child.
I think this idea of “indigo children” as “special saviors” of humanity goes against the idea of this newsletter which has the basic premise that ALL children are born geniuses! Are you now saying that “indigo children” are a special breed of children? “Superior” to other children? What will happen next? Will we have two castes of children? The “superior” indigo caste and those who are not able to exhibit those “special” characteristics? Just look at the first characteristic for “indigo children”! “They have a feeling of royality”! What kind of condition is that? This is a preposterous idea to get people to now begin classifying and segregating children according to these so-called characteristics and then creating “castes” among them! These ideas are as dangerous as using IQ tests to determine whether or not a child is special or not! I’m really disappointed at how far these New Age “philosophers” are going to get people to buy into their “cult” ideas!
My thoughts are that the world is vibrating at a much higher consciousness in every moment. So the snowball effect comes into play. Because my awareness is increased so are my childrens and that’s just one family. Many more families are doing the exact same so we are now sending this beautiful energy out to all. I don’t believe in giving a label of any sort to any group. But as a collective group of human BEINGS yes we are awake and yes we are expanding in self love and acceptance. Thank you.
I believe that these children are a natural evolution of our spieces. I hesitate with the labels that we humans feel this need to use. Almost every child I know is like this. SOme labels as autistic, ADD, ADHD, etc. I do believe that these generations are going to greatly influence our world but I believe that they/we are in the middle of an evolutionary leap or shift if you will. I also believe that this has slowly been happening for quite a number of years now and has been increasing mostly because our awareness is increasing. We are evolving. But I really don’t believe in labels. I got all caught up in this stuff a few years ago and then realized that well, people really want to be different or special. And that ‘we’ dont’ like enigmas, we must give a title to or ‘label’ something in order to feel more comfortable. Oh my, I could go on and on. Basically, we are finally starting, on mass, to ‘be the change’ YAY!!!
I have an 18 year old son who definitely displays indigo child traits. From the moment he was born I knew he had been here before. He looked like a little wise old man (like yoda off star wars) and people I thought I would never hear say it said I know him already, just days after he was born. He has been diagnosed ADHD and dyslexic at age 7. Some believe it is their environment and poor parenting. At about 20 months he scaled a fence at daycare and they eventually found him in a truckyard next door. In the last 12 months he has discussed karma with me, a friend of his introduced him to this philosophy. The school system has certainly not catered for his style of behaviour, and he most certainly sees things differently from most others, particularly adults! I believe they are “different” from others in the sense that it is extremely difficult to “socialise” them to what society wants and expects them to be. They push boundaries which makes them pioneers but also put themselves and at times others at risk. I don’t know what their future holds as they become adolescent and adults, it used to be OK to sit at the back of the class so long as you didn’t disturb others. More and more emphasis is going on education within the schooling system with more pressure to achieve. Failure to achieve this sees them labelled as delinquent, unintelligent (in terms of what society deems to be intelligent). As his mother I try not to worry about his future, guide him in terms of safety and know that this is his journey. He knows right from wrong and choices have consequences. I feel for children that have not had the opportunities afforded others and are antisocial through parenting and environmental deficiencies not through inborn personality traits. To finish, when he was young he would not allow people to kiss him anywhere else than on the top of his head, I didn’t know the royalty aspect until reading this article now. Good luck any parents who are blessed to have these very special (albeit challenging) people in your lives.

So-called “indigo children” are not new. What’s happening is people are realising there are inborn Personality Types. This is just one type of base personality that can be observed in children and it happens to stand out more than the other types in comparison. They may be increasing in numbers due to natural selection, perhaps they just fit with our times better so people are picking mates with this baseline trait more often than other sets of attributes. Evolution happens. But no, they are not here to save the world and they were not created by aliens…
I simply LOVE this topic — thank you for researching it so well and for opening this debate. Indigo children have been sending strong messages to all sensitive humans to step up and put wisdom above knowledge and to join forces cross all boundaries. They set new standards for quality interaction and don’t want to play in a lower league. Personally, I feel extremely inspired by them and know in my guts that every human being as indigo traits in the cells of their bodies, ready to be ignited and unfold. After all — most of the one’s I know are REALLY fun to be with: Unique, sensitive, very bright, creative, unusual, warm, deeply caring
I have always thought and believed that such a phenomenon exists. I am calling this ‘phenomenon’ since we need to see this as a phenomenon — am I right?
There are places where such qualities in young children are nurtured and I have myself seen the distinctive differences in behavior exhibited by these children.
Only time will tell, but then there has to be a recognition of this and nurturing and acceptance of these children for what they truly symbolise before we can see the blossoming of this trait in them.
• Wave of new consciousness? — It’s starting, but would take too long without help.
• Indigo children will open a new door to scientific discoveries? — yes. Current science is too hung up on what it can detect with its existing technologies. Need something not just newer and better, but a whole paradigm shift.
• Every child is in fact born indigo. — No. It’s only a matter of nurturing the traits? — Hardly! Indigo traits aren’t often nurtured — people almost always try very hard to eliminate indigo traits in children they have control over. This includes parents, teachers, doctors, clergy, etc. Life generally is not very easy for young indigos.
• Possible to raise anyone’s vibrational energy? — It’s possible, but only if they are open to it. Raise your family’s vibrational energy — would raise EVERYBODY’S vibrational energy.
• Simply believe in the concept of nurturing empathy, consciousness and higher purpose, but feel reserved on the label “indigo”? No. Both can coexist with no problems — some may be born with a higher degree of it, but all can develop it further. It’s similar to psychic abilities — everybody is born with some degree of them, and can develop them further, but only a few can be called “psychics”. And in all cases I know of, real “psychics” were born (or reborn) with it. The idea of “indigos” can be very comforting to those who fit the category and never knew why they never fit the “norm”, but the main value the term has for the general population is for them to recognize that it isn’t a behavioral or mental problem that needs to be punished or drugged out of children.
Scientists, and the people who believe whatever the scientists claim, have to get over the idea that the brain is the center of all knowledge and consciousness. People can be born with higher psychic abilities just as others are born with unexplainably highly developed abilities in music or art. I doubt any professional scientist would publicly agree with that statement — they would be ostracized by their peers. A similar situation exists with the idea of extraterrestrial life and highly advanced pre-historical civilizations — despite tons of evidence to the contrary! The day somebody invents an instrument that can verify these things, all those scientists will quietly slip onto the bandwagon supporting them and their previous ridicule will never be spoken of again. The world is overdue for a new reality check.
hi, my name is Lory and i am a indigo but i don’t think we are here to save the world but save mankind . mankind needs to understand that our time here on earth is short and us indigo’s are here to help you understand that the word of GOD for it is the truth and to many of you are falling away from his word . God is knocking at your door and you don’t answer . why???? what is wrong are you not ready to be loved and cared for . just like he asked Adam in the garden where are you well he wants to know the same about you . so ask your self where are you and what should your answer be to the one who created you .this is the only reason why us indigo’s are here to show you a small portion of GOD’S love and let you know he is waiting for you to answer the door.
love in CHRIST,LORY K.…
Indigo children are the start of the shift of consciousness into the new civilization.
The current so-called indigo children are not a new idea or phenomenon. It’s all part of a natural process known and anticipated, and has been a part of past generations, although amongst a likely smaller portion of children who are now adults.
There are variables & differences where traits are concerned, due to home, social, educational and environmental conditions, and exposures.
I suspect, science will eventually discover, the consciousness of a child in the womb starts well before, and even sooner than past generations than ever realized in the past, the same as the learning & emotional processes from external stimuli while in the womb.
How can anyone even begin to start to nurture or support such an indigo child or children to their greatest potential if their own understanding, beliefs, or lack of openness limits or excludes anything not recognized or perceived as
conventional by a limited standard of measure in most circles.
Skepticism, resistance, doubt and fear are always prominent and prevalent no matter, and despite proof and evidence that’s often “In Plain Site” in the area of changes in human evolutionary processes and associated abilities and advances.
A greater consciousness is a natural part of the progression of adaptations and changes from the physical, the conscious and sub–
conscious, intellect, of our genetics where IQ & EQ are concerned, including traits like the awareness of Precognition, RV’ing, a greater awareness, Non-comformity of absolute power, rules in the absence of reasoning and definitive proof, and others mentioned.
I love the knowledge we hear, and how all our beautiful children are now flooding the planet, I work with all of these wonderful gentle highly spiritual souls within my Multi Sensory Envionment rooms and it never ceases to amazine me and what they teach me. Those with autism or similar, with their telepathic messages and knowledge makes me very special to be working with these souls at this time.
I a so glad to see there are so many people joined within the same vision — life on the upper level of attitude toward the life, I just cant help leaving a comment. Children are always indigo, christal.…With little or no awarness of the precious gift given to be lived we all grow up and only rare remember the childrens way of making everything with absolute joy and hapiness. Isnt it the way we adults have to remember and train to preserve the life in its origin, never to forget how it has to be lived.
I’m glad to see you touch on this topic. I think there is much more to this phenomenon that what is presented by either Doreen Virtue or her critics.
I write about this phenomenon on my blog, Taking the Lid off the Sun. Anyone has the potential to “save the world,” so to speak. I don’t think it’s helpful to put that kind of pressure on a particular group of kids. Anyone who is respected for who they are and is allowed to develop their inborn gifts and talents is going to help the world become a better place.
What IS helpful, I believe, is to recognize and nurture each child’s gifts, even if some of those gifts seem to rub against mainstream definitions as “normal.” There are many kids with strong intuitive gifts, and if those gifts are shut down because they aren’t nurtured or recognized by society, it’s simply a waste of talent and a waste of a potentially brilliant life.
There is much more to say on this topic than would be appropriate in the comments section, but I hope this is of enough interest to you to check out more of what I’ve written about it on my blog.
Thanks again for bringing up this subject!
Cheers!
Alexis
Yeah as you indicated above, this all started with the Phsyc/writer Nancy Anne Tappe and My personal opinion which I’m sure will recieve a modicum of stick, is simply she should know better than to add one more label on an apparent group of kids. Leave them alone, let them grow up. For Gods sake wait till they have had a taste of real life before you start tinkering with their widdle thinkerthing.
It’s true that indigo children take an important role for this world, if its not then why they had to be born and why this happen (their presences)„„„ in fact they live with people, their kids, even living with other like a normal person. They have a senses and can feel where there is nobody can feel about what happening or feel some changes in world circumstances, so I think they in tune with the world and they live in their own world what we don’t know about.…
It depend on human whether they can respect and work around with them and create some new conciousness, maybe it’s possible if all of us can feel this vibrant energy and share with others, we will know our-self high purpose.……
Some of us are born knowing, this gets us a head of most. There have always been and always will be the gifted ones, that just know better. We are and always will be non-conformists able to do what ever we choose, and we can do so for good or bad. We don’t always fit in and never really try. Most of us are just here for the fun of it and to be examples to those who don’t believe in themselves. It is not and never has been our purpose to change your reality, we only guide where we can.
As a 37 year old Indigo Adult. I can tell you first hand that growing up highly intuitive, empathic and “aware” might seem a “gift” to many but to a child that grew up in a mostly “unaware” world it was quite painful. Hearing the term “indigo” approximately three years ago, was a further awakening for me. I felt some finally understood me, spoke my language, validated what I had felt and experienced growing up but was unable to articulate to my parents, siblings, teachers, friends and many authority figures in my life. The “New Earth Children” are not woo woo, they are real, they are here NOW and they are playing a huge part in human evolution, leading us into dimension of TRUTH, LOVE, PEACE, JOY AND GRACE. As a Spiritual Guide, Reiki Master and Kid’s Coach I have dedicated most of my practice to The New Earth Children (Indigo, Crystal, Rainbow, Star) and allow my own life experience to help support the wonderful beings of Light. I also will be holding several workshops for parents, teachers, caregivers, grandparents etc.. who would like to know more about these children and how they can support them, care for them and allow them to thrive and Be All that they are meant to BE! They are here for us (the adults) and doing a huge part to usher in A New Earth. They are high frequency/vibrating beings fully aware of their multidimensional nature. Blessings of love and light to all! My website is http://www.thesixthelement.ca and my email address is thesixthelement@live.com. Thank you all for starting this discussion and for all your comments and input.
First off the world does’nt need saving. All is as it should be.I have an idigo and as unpredictable as she is I love her as she is. She is 17 and is trying to help or save a manic deprecive boyfriend. They break up they get back together,on and on.I teach Yoga, Qigong, and Meditation. We had a great time growing together but now it’s not cool to talk about certain things when friends are around. She can see auras, loves horses, and does’nt fit in with very many of here female peers.I am 52 and have indigo traits. Being called weird is a compliment to me now.It just means different. Many of my intuitive friends all say the same thing. Wow is she powerfull! What a healer she is going to be!
Hello Michelle,
I appreciate your enthusiasm on this topic.
I would rather substitute the word intuitive for the word Indigo. Being intuitive is something we all are as I am believing that we all have a soul.
I do not think anyone can come and save the world; we can each save ourselves and perhaps provide a good example to inspire others. However I do not believe anyone is more in the eyes of importance than anyone else. We each have a mission to accomplish.
I cannot say that children such as people are new or an evolution in the human experience. It is “new” to western culture, but a way of life for all who were not influenced by western culture. Tribal people have long known how to walk with the earth and that which is in all things. Of course, just like with other things, like drawing or running, some can do better than others, but all can do in some way or another with adaptation.
As for my own experience, I have known many who can heal (even bring back from the dead), see, and just know that which is not known to the five senses. I simply say these people are awake as opposed to those who are asleep to the world of spirit.
dance in the light!
Susan
I am an indigo child and my children are as well. They are more sensitve to light and have a high startle after birth.
My life has not been easy, but still the purpose that I was born knowing has survived. The dream of peace and a better way for Women, Children and Men to exist.
Hey Everyone! I love reading all of your comments on this topic — thank you so much for being part of this discussion! I am by no means an expert on this topic — except for the fact that I have: a feeling of royalty, have a difficult time with authority, get frustrated with systems, see a better way of doing things, can’t stand guilt discipline, am strong willed, call things as I see it, have quite a fiery demeanor, seem defiant and have a strong will to help others! Phew! Now you see why I am so interested in this topic — and can probably understand why I started Project GiftED!
So, I am interviewing Christie Marie next week to get her opinion on some of the topics you all are discussing. Leave any further questions you have below. Thanks!
Melissa
when my second born son was frustrating me with his defiance, I picked up Dorens’s book in desperation. I am now a different Mom. More understanding and creative. Yes, my indigo child has taught me to appreciate him for being himself. And when I approach him with a soft heart instead of my old autocratic controlling one, our relationship blooms and so does he. This is what they are here to teach us. How to fix ourselves instead of controlling others.
