Numerology and My New Year…

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Well 1st I would like to say to everyone - Happy 2010!  I hope you all have an amazing year and I am really looking forward to sharing this journey with you!

And since it is a new year I decided to see what's in store and got my numerology report done.  I am into Astrology and Psychics - but it was my first introduction to Numerology, and overall it was very accurate!  But the bad news is - it looks like it is a 4 Personal year for me (GROAN!)  LOL  Here's why:

Melissa, Your Personal Year for 2010 is 4

This is a year to be organized and practical.  Take care of details.  Commit yourself entirely to your goals.
Melissa, your concentration and ability to focus will be much improved over last year.  You will have an attitude of realism and determination. There can be a sense of limitation and some frustration this year.  However, it is a year of important opportunities that must be seized.  There can be considerable work-related travel. You must be flexible this year to make full use of the opportunities that present themselves.  It will require a combination of perseverance, hard work, and versatility.

Debate: Are Admissions Tests For Kindergarten Ethical?

Picture 9Okay, here's something I really want your guys' opinion on.

How do you feel about prepping your toddlers for kindergarten's admissions tests? Just like you prep for your S.A.T.s, you can tutor your toddlers to get into the best kindergartens.

The prices are pretty high, ranging from $145/hour to thousands for a few sessions.

I can't stress the importance of early infant education, but when you have to pay thousands...

I'm asking this because of this article I was reading the other day. Check it out, leave your comments, and let me know what you think...

Tips for the Admissions Test ... to Kindergarten

By Sharon Otterman from the NYTimes.com

Kayla Rosenblum sat upright and poised as she breezed through the shapes and numbers, a leopard-patterned finger puppet resting next to her for moral support.

But then came something she had never seen before: a visual analogy showing a picture of a whole cake next to a slice of cake. What picture went with a loaf of bread in the same way?

Kayla, who will be 4 in December, held her tiny pointer finger still as she inspected the four choices. “Too hard,” she peeped. Read the full article »

Gym Not For Jocks Anymore

It used to be that math, English, and science were the subjects every parent wanted their children to excel in. But it appears that physical fitness might be added to that list too.

In a study, researchers found that kids who were physically fit, managed to score higher marks on standardized testing in math and English. Pretty impressive.

You can check out the article below for the rest of the details, but I just have one question about this study.

Are the kids better at math and English because they're physically fit or could it be that kids who excel in school are just more likely to excel in everything, be it physical education, art, or any other subject? I'm not sure where the causality fits here.

If any of you know the answer to this or have further information on this study, please share! Just drop a comment.

Physically Fit Kids Do Better In School

From ScienceDaily.com

ScienceDaily (Jan. 30, 2009) — A new study in the Journal of School Health found that physically fit kids scored better on standardized math and English tests than their less fit peers.

Researchers examined the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement in a racially and economically diverse urban public school district of children enrolled in grades 4 – 8 during the 2004 – 2005 academic year.

Results of their study show that there is a significant relationship between students’ academic achievement and physical fitness. The odds of passing both standardized math and English tests increased as the number of fitness tests passed increased, even when controlling for gender, race/ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

School time and resources are often diverted from Physical Education and opportunities for physical activity such as recess. However, this study shows that students who do well on fitness tests also do well on math and English standardized tests.

I agree with Adiaha. There is only one important trait: LOVE. All other virtues flow from that.

Lessons of 2009: Is our Education System Responsible for the Recession?

iStock_000006105658XSmallIt's coming close to the end of the year now and while it is the time of the year to celebrate in joy and cheer with our loved ones, it is also that time of the year to reflect upon the lessons of the year so we can move on into the year smarter, stronger and wiser.

While we have our own personal reflections to learn from, it is also important to reflect upon the bigger picture too.

I'd like to bring your attention to the recession. 2009 was the year that America and the world began picking up the pieces of the Wall Street collapse.

What should be the greatest lesson that we, as a society, learn from this?

According to Thomas L. Friedman, a columnist in the New York Times, struggling public schools is actually a critical, but unspoken, reason for the recession.

"Now that we are picking up the pieces, we need to understand that it is not only our financial system that needs a reboot and an upgrade, but also our public school system". He then continues to say, "Otherwise the jobless recovery won’t be just a passing phase, but our future."

Christie Sheldon is an Intuitive Healer and Medium. She connects to the Archangelic realm to shift, change, and transform people’s lives. She has worked with over 10,000 Clients and demonstrates these talents on the Radio and in Seminars.

I’ve come across a lot of strange things in my line of work. Mostly because my job is to root out the main problems in a client’s life, and clear them so they can manifest their life… their way. So, I look for core wounds in client’s lives so I can align them with healthy new core beliefs. So, hearing things most people might not believe parents would do to kids is all too common for me, unfortunately.

So, it’s the time of year right now where parents have a choice of what kind holiday their children receive. I’d love to share with you an experience I had as a little girl.

Moms – We Love YOU!

This post was inspired by an article written by Janet Doman, at the Institutes for the Achievement of Human potential.  Her article touched me so much, especially around this time of year, that I had to write a version of my own...

iStock_000010562074SmallShe does not tell you proudly of all the wonderful things she has done; instead, her answer becomes a confession of all the things she feels she should have done and has not.  She looks at her to do list and doesn't see the things she completed that day, only the 50 she still has left to do.

What is the problem here?

It’s Time To Be a Little Naughty!

Who's on the Naughty List?

Who's on the Naughty List?

Hey parents! It's the Holiday season, and I tend to be more Naughty around this time of year - at work, with my eating habits, and with my girls! I know what you are thinking!  But what I am really saying is that I tend to be more lenient this time of year and let things slide...

So, I would love to know - if you could (or do!) let your kids get away with breaking just one rule this time of year, what would it be?  For me, bed time ceases to exist around the holidays, as well as my 1 treat a day rule - I have a weakness for cupcakes and cookies and peanut butter balls!

And while I am on this topic... I think there are some rules kids should break all year round!

10 Lessons On Life And Money From Dad

When it comes to raising kids, every parent is like a multi-purpose professor. You teach them about nutrition, ethics, history, math, reading, writing... The list goes on and on and on... and sometimes, you have teach subjects that you're not exactly proficient in (like sewing - I knew how to thread the needle, and then just made the rest up!)  But there's one topic that tons of parents (me included) have trouble with and that's money.

So when I found this article that summarizes the top 10 lessons one man learned from his dad it reminded me so much of my dad that I had to share it.  So, I only spent a few weeks a year with my dad growing up, but he made a huge impact on my money blueprint - and apparently so did this guy's dad... there aren't any specifics like, what's a good interest rate or which industry sector to invest in, but I think these money lessons are some good basics for leading a fulfilling life.
