3 Steps To Transform Any Challenging Moment Into A Rewarding One

In 1991 my four-year old daughter had a bad moment at a preschool. It might not sound like much, just another child “telling on her,” but suddenly my previously independent daughter couldn’t leave my leg.

Sandra "Sandy" Blackard is a parent, author, instructor, life coach and founder of Language of Listening®. With over a decade of parenting and child rearing experience, she has a unique ability to help adults see the world the way children see it and make sense of what they think and do.

She is the author of SAY WHAT YOU SEE®, co-author of Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) Treatment Manual, and Founding Director of the Center for Play Therapy. Sandy and her husband Patrick have two insightful daughters.

I remember watching her try to step through the door of her beloved kids’ science class and freeze up, completely unable to step inside without bursting into tears. I was at a loss…and to make things worse, Kindergarten was just around the corner.

What I learned about listening from a play therapist, combined with some personal breakthrough training I had taken shortly before resulted in a huge “Aha!” moment for me and eventually, the world of parenting: There’s only one thing you need to remember to transform any challenging moment with a child into a rewarding one: SAY WHAT YOU SEE®.

Say What You See

Through 8 years of relentlessly sharing with other parents what I had learned that allowed my 5-year old to go skipping off to Kindergarten without looking back; her three–year old sister to brush her teeth without the crossed arms and a pouty, “No!” of defiance; and countless other children to move through challenging moments in their lives, I started hearing myself say, “You just say what you see!”

Still, I thought I was just talking about listening, not the full range of parenting.

But in 2005, I woke up one morning with the sudden realization, “It’s all one thing!”

It’s Not Too Late to Accelerate Your Child’s Learning

Many parents I talk with are concerned that they’ve left it until too late to enrich their children’s lives with the skills to help them find and pursue their dreams. I assure these parents that whether their child is 8 or 18, it’s not too late.
I know this because I speak from personal experience.

I grew up in Seattle, Washington, one of three children. I was a shy kid with a quiet voice – I dreaded having to speak up in class. On top of that, I lived in the shadow of a talented older sister who was good at everything.

Despite my terror of “sticking out” in school, I managed to move through elementary school and began to find myself in high school. Soon thereafter I married my high school sweetheart and, in a few short years, had two wonderful children.

While I had “progressed” from shy student to shy housewife, I felt there was more I needed to do with my life. I joined a new real estate firm in San Francisco, where we lived. In four years, thanks in part to the company’s win/win culture, I experienced great success and learned so many things that would later serve me.

How I Became A Teacher

At this point, I teamed up with one of the partners of the real estate firm to open a business school for people that would teach the success principles used by the real estate firm. In 1978 we opened the Burklyn Business School.

A massive inspiration and turning point for me shortly after opening Burklyn came from three weeks spent with Bulgarian professor, Dr. Georgi Lozanov, the creator of what is now known as “accelerated learning.” We incorporated many of his principles and the business school was a huge success. Everything was going great.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last. It was about this time that my marriage ended. Shortly after that, I lost everything I owned by investing in options as a way to raise money for the school. My partner became ill. I felt so alone. But I not only survived, I learned a valuable lesson that no one can take away your dreams, talents and desires.

Turning Onto A New Path of Learning

The business school had made such a positive impact on so many peoples’ lives who found such joy in learning that an associate suggested I try a program for youth patterned after the school. It made me wonder what life might be like for people if they could get to that transformational experience earlier in life. What if I could help make that happen for kids? Read the full article »

Be Careful of Products That May Have False Educational Value for Kids!

With education being such an important part of our children's lives, it's not surprising that many people jump on the bandwagon of educational products. And unfortunately, not every one of them are actually good for your kids, even if they are popular.

Picture 6

Case in point, the wildly popular "Baby Einstein" video has actually been proven to have false claims. Thanks to the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, whose mission is to "stop the false and deceptive marketing of baby videos, "Baby Einstein" is now being acknowledged to not have the educational value it claims to have.

Disney corporation has now agreed to refund the current value of $15.99 for Baby Einstein DVD's purchased in the past 5 years.

The Power Of Staying In “The Present”

being-present

So after my "fat guy" experience last week, I have been making a concerted effort to make sure I clearly recognize the times in my life that I am judging people and to stop doing so as soon as I hear that little voice in my head saying, "What is she thinking?" or "I can't believe they..."

So when I was at Maddy and Syd's cheerleading practice last night, I recognized that sneaky little voice almost immediately!

A father and his 3 year old son walked over and set up a folding chair, a blanket on the ground and about 20 toy cars.  The child was immediately given the order to stop running around and sit on his blanket and play while his sister practiced.

“Please don’t make me a good girl” – Love, Your Daughter

Attention!  This is not a long post, but an important one - so please read!

mannequin

Telling your daughter she is being/has to be/or was a good girl is one of the most debilitating things you can do for her!  Please don't give into the temptation to reward with "Good Girl!" or make her into a people pleaser or make her think it is not okay to get mad.  Please let her have her own opinions, teach her it is okay to make mistake and make sure she doesn't feel pressured to do everything right.

Girls today walk a very tight rope, trying to balance everyone's expectations, embody the true Barbie girls spirit and in the process often lose themselves and their own personal truth.

Proven By Science: Spiritual Kids Are Happier Kids

girl-on-the-grass

Sometimes it takes a scientific study to make us see the obvious. If someone were to ask you, "Would you be happier if you were to feel, everyday, that your life has a true meaning?", what would your answer be?

Well, most of the people wouldn't hesitate to reply, "Yes!" It's hard to be unhappy if you're entirely sure that life is worth living :)

Now for some reason, it's easy to forget that the same is true for children. Even though they seem to be so caught up with their games and creating chaos when you're not watching -- they too, long for meaning, to connect with something higher than themselves and to have a sense of purpose.

I found a study that takes us straight back to basics -- spiritual kids are happier kids.

6 Human Needs For A Successful Relationship

toni-robbinsI'm sure you've heard of Anthony Robbins - a huge man (with a very sexy voice!), who is also a world-renowned motivational speaker and author. I met Tony and his wife Sage in Fiji in May and they have so much knowledge and compassion for the human condition that it blows me away.  I have been wanting to write a post for awhile now on his teachings and how they can be applied to parenting - so here it is!

Tony, as he is more fondly called, likes to say that human beings have 6 fundamental needs that should be met for a successful and fulfilling relationship - whether it's with a partner, friend or child.

He also said that if we have one without the other, or if one should be missing from the list, then the relationship will not be successful or fulfilling.

So, what are the 6 needs?

The Fat Guy on The Plane Behind Me…

judges

Ok, so we have all been there... Maybe your characters were different, but you know the story:

I am exhausted from weeks of traveling, so I'm trying to relax in my seat on the plane, hoping for peace and quiet until I get can get home to my own bed, when suddenly, the last passenger came running on board just as they are closings doors...

He's fat, loud, and he's is sitting right behind me! Crap. He starts talking and just doesn't stop! This guy is no meek Mary - he's a full blown attention seeker, loud and full of opinions. Oh! And he's one of those people that tells the same old story about how he had to run at a full blown sprint to make his connection to our plane and how he got shin splints doing it!

Thanksgiving Photo Competition – What’s Your Most Precious Memory?

gifted-challengeA picture paints a thousand words...

With just one look you could see everyone's emotions clearly and directly. You could see where it was taken, the time period, how the people in it were feeling and what they were doing. I personally believe that words can never replace a photograph, no matter how hard we try.

Here's a photo that represents a very meaningful moment for me and my daughter Maddy:
