The Heart Circle

The Heart Circle10.0101CharlotteA few weeks back I had a post from Dr. Charlotte Reznick with 8 Powerful Healing Tools.  We had a lot of great responses and feedback from GiftED readers, so this week I am bringing you another cool family tool she recommends that I am going to start implementing with my girls.  This is called a Heart Circle.

The premise behind this activity is - How we communicate with each other as a family is the key to building a strong and loving family unit...

Dr. Charlotte says that "Heart Circle Talks are an easy way to build positive communication skills... to discuss concerns and share good feelings."

And, it is really easy to do!

1st -  One family member picks the topic for the week maybe it is school and work, maybe it's 1 thing that has caused you stress during the week, or it could be something fun like ideas for the family vacation.

2nd - Find a cherished family object, like a family picture, stuffed animal or favorite trinket and bring it to the family circle.

3rd - Once everyone is gathered together with the object you follow these 8 simple rules:

1. Person holding the object talks.
2. Pass the object gently to one side when done sharing.
3. Don't need to share - have the right to skip your turn.
4. Talk about what you feel. Speak from your heart.
5. No put downs.
6. Maintain confidentiality
(don't share what is said without permission).
7. Equal time for all (use a timer if you need to).
8. Stay in the circle (don't run off) till Heart Talk is finished.

I think this a great way to have a weekly family meeting as it gives space for everyone to talk openly and honestly and to be heard without judgment or reproach. It is also a good way for families to open the lines of communication with each other that so often get blocked in the business of our days and the rush to work, soccer practice, finish homework, etc.

If you decide to use this approach or one similar please let me know how works for you... I am going to start this with my girls this weekend.  I will let you know how it goes!

Take care!

Melissa
